Artist Statement

I intend for others to experience a new way to see, when they look at my work.
I am interested in the relationships between texture, color, and form. The spontaneity of first laying canvas strips or paint on the canvas, starts the layering process. Layers of paint and intersecting shapes combine and become a single entity.

About the Artist

Controlled chaos was a term she used to describe her work years ago and in many ways still holds true today, but she has refined her style by making subtle adjustments in ideas, concepts, or methods. In most cases, her work can be referenced from photographs taken on her iPhone. The images could come from nature, an experience, happenstance, and on occasion, a fluke or a happy surprise. Discovering the technique that suits a particular image leads to a rewarding result that is not predetermined, and enables her to have a variety of ideas and options available, whether she retains the image as a photo or as inspiration for a drawing, painting, or relief print.

Lisa’s instinctive ability to see potential work in these images gives her the capability to apply form and color into new ideas that will render an expressive interpretation of the original likeness. Approaching each piece of work as an experiment, that suggestion, frees her to explore the possibilities and to succeed or fail in the attempt. Once the plan is considered, she breaks down the components of the study, then gradually builds the layers to different degrees of complexity. She believes you start the piece with your idea, but the art eventually tells you where to go. Therefore, intuitively, making use of her creative and natural abilities.

Lisa continues to cultivate her methods and to create work that overlaps disciplines. She enjoys the process of making art; the trial and error of exploring a particular idea, and allowing the viewer to invent their own interpretation of the work. When she looks at other artist’s work, she is interested in technique, composition, color, and balance and finds it interesting the way artist communicate through their art. Lisa’s work embodies photography, painting, drawing, and relief printmaking.

Lisa connects with the art community by entering artist calls in local and online galleries. Her work has been shown at Allegany Arts Council, Women’s Club of Chevy Chase, Artmajeur.com, Lightspacetime.art, Brandeis University-Blacklist Journal, Beacon Newspaper, Sligo Journal, Circle Gallery in Annapolis, MD., and most recently the Vestige Concept Gallery in Pittsburgh, PA.
